Special events

The Flight Line Café will host and participate in several kinds of special events, both inside and outside of the café. We plan to work closely with several local clubs and organizations to promote and host these events. One such event is a remote-controlled air show for the local builders and flyers of these R/C planes.

The Flight Line Café will also host invite-only events. That's one of the best features about being a member of the Virtual Airlines-the ability to participate in the special events that the Flight Line Café will host the last weekend of every month. These special events are not only fun and challenging, but they are also free of charge for the competing VA's (Halifax Virtual Air and Volusia Virtual Airlines).

To give you an idea of what kind of special events these will be, here are some examples:

» Race Around the World Series » 1920s Barnstorming Steeple Chase » Civic Air Patrol
Race Around the World Series When aviation first started there where plenty of records to break and create. Many pilots died trying to set such records. Flying on very limited navigational resources, locations for fuel and weather reports these pioneers where half insane and half heroic.

The Race Around the World Series allows you to see if you have what its got to be one of these elite pilots and put your achievements down in the history books for others to try and break. This is a invite only race that is for the members of the two Virtual Airlines flying clubs at the Flight Line Cafe (Halifax Virtual Air and Volusia Virtual Airlines). Free of charge to the users with a $100 dollar prize to the VA that wins. In creating this series race a different continent will be hosted throughout the series. Designed to take up to 24 hours to finish, there will only be a starting and finishing point. How each VA chooses to fly to get there is solely up to them. Both VA will fly the same Cessna 172's for the race and it will be up to the pilots and good flight planning that will create a winner.

Since back in the day there was no such things as charts and navigational equipment, this too will be the case for this series to the pilot while in the cockpit. Once the plane is on the ground and the pilot is out of the cockpit the pilot and the rest of the VA will be able to communicate and plan their next move using all available resources. However once the pilot gets into the cockpit there will be no more communication between the acting pilot and ground support crew. The ground support crew can only guess of where the pilot is going to land and try and plan what's to come for the next pilot.

Each VA can use as many pilots from their VA as they want and the pilots can fly as long and often as they want. It will be through good team work and planning that a winner will merge. Each VA will supply their own reference materials for flight planning. Both VA's will be informed on the up coming race of which continent will be raced on but not until the actual start of the race will either VA receive information of the starting and finish points of the race. As in real life if a pilot were to crash, the VA will be without a plane and therefore unable to finish the race. So choosing the right pilots as well as paying attention to things such as gas, environment, weather and the plane will all be very important in order to not only win but finish.

1920s Barnstorming Steeple Chase Welcome to the great 1920's Barnstorming Steeple Chase Race. The fun of this event is reliving history of when flying was a sideshow event and modern day travel was straight out of a page in a kids sci-fi comic book!

In these races held at the Flight Line Cafe, for the members of the two Virtual Airlines (Halifax and Volusia), each VA will test there abilities in pre-flight, VFR navigation and tail dragger handling skills. All for the simple goal of to be the first to land at the finish point after successfully making each checkpoint.

At the start of the race each VA will receive a list of checkpoints offering a latitude, longitude, field elevation and accompanying photo of what each checkpoint looks like. It is then up to each VA to gather weather information and start creating a flight plan to get to each checkpoint. Pilots can fly as often as they like and for as long as they like but are unable to use any sectionals or navigational equipment while in the simulator.

A pilot can also land where ever they choose and can relay with the next pilot only when on the ground. At any given point while on the ground the pilot can receive information on what their Latitude and Longitude is in which can be given to that pilots VA team members to help in planning on where and how to fly next to get to the next checkpoint. The entire VA can participate outside the cockpit as a ground crew by keeping an eye on weather patterns, chart planning up coming legs, assigning the next pilot to fly and briefing that pilot on what to do and expect.

Since each race will be ran in downloaded real weather and is designed to be an endurance race of several hundred miles over all kinds of terrain all in the cockpit of the tail dragger simulators, this race will bring out the best of both the VA and those who fly the race.

Civil Air Patrol In this event, a search and rescue mission has been created where each team is racing to be the first to find a downed plane.

Information about the downed plane such as flight plan and what the plane looks like will be provided and then each team will take off from the same airport to try and find the missing plane.

This event will be done in Cessna 172. One big difference from the other special events is that the pilot can have all reference materials in the cockpit and is able to talk to other team members outside the cockpit via headphones and mic on an intercom channel.

This event will have a time limit of 24 hours in which to find the downed plane.
